    Corrupted Files on Installation CD's

I'm trying to install Debian 5.0 on an older machine (Athlon 1200). I'm running into an odd problem. Every time I try to install, I am told that the files on the cd are corrupted. On that box the checksums fail, but when I check the files on the machine that I burnt the cd on, the checksums are fine.

I burnt the cd on a Win XP Home machine, with ImgBurn. ImgBurn verifies the files and they always pass. I'm at my wits end. If anyone has any ideas how I can get around this, I'd be grateful.

Note that I have installed Debian 4.0 on this machine in the past with no issues.

Could just be a bad burn, these things happen. Try burning at slower speeds and see if that helps.

My guess is it's a bad drive. I tried an old version of Debian that I had previously installed without a problem, and it failed as well. Anyway, going to try a new drive. Hopefully that will do the trick.

I would put my money on this. Have you tried running a DVD drive cleaning kit? It may just save binning the old drive. Over time and with heavy use DVD drives do start to go. fortunately they are cheap enough that replacing them only costs a tiny bit more than buying a cleaning kit.

It turns out the real culprit was a bad ide cable. What a pain in the arse that was. However, my sister did get a nicer drive out of it. This one can read dvd's...
