Complete Linux beginner - need som pointers

    Hello there.

We are going to have a Linux experiment in school.

Our assignment is to install Debian without a graphical interface and then complete certain tasks such as partitioning hard drives both during and after installation. Configuring a SSH-service, schedule a backup system and more.

As a complete beginner I found most of this to be very challenging, however I really want to learn.

Now, I do not want you to answer me exactly what to do but I need some pointers, some good beginner guides or guides that explain how to finish some tasks, etc.

    Thanks for your help.

since you have asked only for URL's,
    for text based installation click
The Perfect Setup - Debian Etch (Debian 4.0) | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

following installation guide for gui,I would suggest you learn with easy GUI first then try text mode - both are almost same except the gui.
    Debian GNU/Linux Installation Guide

    any issues post them here

Here's a couple from my collection:

    Debian Tutorial
    Learning Debian/GNU Linux
    Bash Guide for Beginners
    Linuxtopia <- Lots of info

Here's a simple tutorial for configuring an ssh client:
    SSH

That plus everything else people have already recommended should keep you pretty busy.

I have many, many, more ebooks on my pc though. If you're interested, just send me a PM.
