I have the same problem in my AMD64/Jaunty64/NVidia setup.
I have tried xserver-xorg but only see references to keyboard. Can anyone help?

You could try booting your Favorite LiveCD and have a look at the xorg.conf file it gives you, maybe you can copy and paste that info into your xorg.conf file on the hard drive. I've done it before, if you need help with that, just let us know.

Ah, I am not sure what you are asking ... can you restate your question/problem.

A common problem
In my web searches I see others have had this problem.
What's more, my Chimei monitor seems not to conform to standard product ID handshake as required by Linux.
I installed using Alternative CD; I don't think my Jaunty64 will accept a 32-bit as a repository. But I can copy the conf file from one of my other 32-bit Jaunty computers.
Thanks for the idea.

Fixed. Easier than I thought; it's quite normal for that file to be empty:
"Go to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers and check the box to enable the restricted drivers for your NVIDIA card if the option is provided."
I chose tha hard way. Forgot the Occam's Razor rule!
