    Cool Can not update my debian os

    Being a newby I did install a debian about 3 years ago and runs great, but I have not being able to update the system I get this message every time I try......help please

    W: Couldn't stat source package list //http.us.debian.org]Index of / sarge/main Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org_debian_dists_sarge_main_binary-amd64_Packages) - stat (2 No such file or directory)

    I had to modify this output so as to take away the URL's

    Welcome to the forums!

    If it's been 3 years since you updated, you really should do a fresh install because too much has changed in that time for an update to be reliable.

    not to contradict you ozar, but the problem is that sarge is no longer a supported release for debian, so no more mirrors for it, and that is the reason why OP can't download and install updates

    OP: you need to install newest version of debian in order to get updates

    No, what I was saying is that in my own opinion any OS that hasn't been updated in 3 years is too old for updates in most cases, mirrors or no mirrors. I wasn't saying that an OS that is three years old can't be updated simply because it's too old. I do understand that it might accept updates if repos still exist for it. Either way, I still suggest a fresh install.
