Debian testing to stable dist-upgrade question

    Hi all,

I was wondering if I could safely apt-get dist-upgrade to the stable branch?

Is it going to break my system or should I consider a clean install?

You do 'dist-upgrade' from testing to stable? Isn't testing newer than stable?

In any case, a clean install is always the preferred method esp when you fear breaking a system.

I don't think you can go back to stable from testing branch, which means you would have to do a clean install.

One usually 'dist-upgrade' to the Testing branch. Or the next Stable release if you're using an older stable. If you're using Lenny, the current Stable branch, one would upgrade to Testing, code name Squeeze.

Where are you come from? From Etch (oldStable) to Lenny (current Stable)? Or from Lenny to Squeeze (Testing)?

I have done a dist-upgrade without problems before. Either way, I perfer a clean install. Sort of like going to the dentist to get your teeth cleaned. You come out with a clean feeling.

But why not try an 'apt-get dist-upgrade? See what happens. Just save what ever important info you have.

    It's easy to netinstall Debian.
