Hello. I just noticed that my Debian setup won't play wav files. Its newly installed Lenny with the latest kernel.

Do I need to install a codec or library or something?

    Take care.

    But otherwise, sound works ok?

Newbie trying to play a wav file in Debian

Yes, I play music or youtube stuff, whatever.

But I did notice that there was a lack of sound when booting up to Debian. Is there supposed to be a wav file when the desktop loads? I'm not hearing anything there.

Debian Newbie trying to get wav files to work

Hello. I tried a couple of more things but neither one worked.

    First, I went to System/Preferences/Sound
Under the "Sounds" Tab, I enabled Software-Sound-Mixing and Play-System-Sounds
But none of the system sounds there worked when I pressed the play button.
Under the "System Beep" Tab, I enabled System-Beep, but still no system sounds.

Then I went to Applications/Sound and Video/Sound Control
I enabled the sound for line-in and microphone because they were turned off.
    Still no system sounds

I tried playing a CD using Rhythmbox and it played correctly.

Debian Newbie trying to get wav files to work

Hello. Thanks for all the help.

I finally downloaded PulseAudio and changed it's settings and this seems to have cured my problems. I think part of the problem was the need for simultaneous output. (I listen to music but also would like to get e-mail notifications at the same time). But I think now the e-mail notifications don't happen if I'm listening to music. Not a big deal I still get a visual indication.
