Please help me set up a printer on Debian

    Hi,

I have a Canon Pixma MX300. It's hooked up to a netbook running Debian, which I would eventually like to use as a print server.

I am led to understand that gutenprint is the best driver for this printer, so i installed that via apt-get. I used the cups web interface to set up the printer, choosing Canon as the make, but the exact model I have does not appear in the list, so I chose something similar. When I tried to print, the printer would pull the paper through without printing on it and report the job as complete.

I uninstalled the version of gutenprint from the repositories and downloaded a .deb from the open printing website (can't post a direct link because i'm new).

I repeated the same steps as above with the cups web admin interface. Again, my exact model was not listed, so I went with the following driver: Canon PIXMA MP830 - CUPS+Gutenprint (OpenPrinting LSB 3.2) v5.2.4 Simplified

The same thing happens. It does everything except actually print. It just pulls the paper through without doing anything to it!

Do I have the wrong driver? If so, what is the right one, or how do I find it? If it's not the driver, what should I be doing that I'm not?

You probably need newer versions of cups, gutenprint and supporting packages. Another option would be to download the ppd for your model and when you setup the printer, point cups to the ppd file.
