    download and burn the dvd's

    Good morning,
Not sure if this is the proper steps I need to take in posting, so my apologies if this is not.
I am completely new to Linux. Last spring I installed Ubuntu after an aggravating stint with WHS. I own a Landscape co. so due to the season that's about as far as I got. I had lost my pw and user name and had tried for days to retrieve it to no avail including an unsuccessful reinstall.

Through research I have decided to go with Debian now. Seem like it would be
more fun. However, I have tried for 2 days to download and burn the dvd's (on a windows vista machine) and again have had absolutely no luck installing on what will be my server.
The machine I am installing to is an HP with a P4 processor, New 320g HD with nothing on it but the Ubuntu.
WHS trial version worked fine but want to try to work away from MS.
I had tried to burn the DVD's with infrarecorder.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Bob

    Welcome to the forums, Bob!

Check this HowTo for proper steps to follow for downloading and burning the ISO files to disk as images:

Can you be more specific about the failure? Does it begin to boot into the installer at all? Does it not boot? If it does not boot, have you set your BIOS to boot from the CD/DVD device?

If your computer is capable of booting from a USB device, you might also try creating a bootable usb flash drive and installing from that.

Bob... also note that you can probably get by with just the 1st DVD (instead of downloading and burning all 5 of them) if you have a fairly fast internet connection. The additional DVDs contain many other Debian packages, but you can download only what you need/want through the internet after installing from the first DVD.

    Need help Frustrated

Ok, I have tried to download and install from a CD, DVD and a stick. I have checked all downloads and they are ok. I am installing on a machine with umbuntu server. I had started last year and due to time restrictions, (I own a landscape co) I had set it aside. I have since lost my username and pw for the server. I have gone through numerous sited to try to fix the problem and recover the lost info. I have even tried to reinstall umbuntu but have had no luck.

I know this is not rocket science but what the heck am I doing wrong??!!?!?!

    Thanks!

What have you done to try and reset your password? It should be a fairly simple matter of booting into Ubuntu's recovery mode and resetting the password.

How to reset your password in Ubuntu

And again, what exactly happens when you boot from a CD? All my previous questions apply. Are you able to boot into the live environment? (Assuming a Live CD/USB.) Where is the failure occurring?

I have gone into the rescue screen. A red box pops up, then I've tried root and root w networking, both times it asks for a pw for maintance or hit control d to continue. All options keep aking for som sort of pw.

When I loaded the dsk I believe back in march of last year. I did not really set up anything on it as I ran short of time.

When I try to reload the dsk I receive a msg stating press f1 to try to reboot or f2 to change settings. I have pretty much tried to change all settings, many combinations, and have had no luck.

I have gone through the steps you sent but I am asked for a pw for maint.

Ah, look at Ubuntu Server trying to be secure and all.

Ok, as I recall, if you edit the boot line and append
    Code:
    rw init=/bin/bash
to the end you should be able to get in. If not, there is always the hard way as described in the Not As Easy Method here.

Here is a written way that reed9 is talking about Recover Passwd in the howto it says to add the word single, don't, just add what reed9 said to add rw init=/bin/bash make sure there is a space between the last character of the kernel line and the rw. Once in just type passwd and enter your new password.
