[SOLVED] Help with audio on GNOME
Ok, I have a workstation that I had 9.10 Ubuntu running on over fall because I haven't played with linux in a few years. But I have always been a debian person, just didn't have the patience to set it up, where as ubuntu had all of the hardware working "out of the box." I just replaced ubuntu with 5.04 Lenny Debian a few days ago and go the official Ati drivers installed, along with GDM and Gnome, and KDE. The audio doesn't do anything under GNOME, I downloaded "gnome-audio" and installed it, in the audio settings I have "Intel HDA" selected for everything, and if I click "test" it pops up the window say "testing pipeline" and I can here the beeping through my sound system. But if I go over to the Sounds tab and click "play" next to the various sounds for logging off and stuff, nothing happens. No sound, nothing. However, if I log of and start a session in KDE, BAM, logon sounds and everything, and I haven't set anything up on KDE, today was the first time I logged on to, it. I logged on, heard the sound, and logged off scratching my head...
Does any one have any ideas for a linux newbie to try?

Execute alsamixer in Terminal and adjust volume of all available options. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

I did the alsamixer command and set basically every thing at 100, though most things already were. The sound isn't muted on the sound icon, and the same result.

If I go to /usr/share/sounds/ and just double click on files like "logon.wav" then I hear the little sound. However, if I then open up the sound preferences window and manually select the "logon.wav" files as my log on sound and then click Play, no sound.
