    actually my Debian is still in Etch stable version.

    What is the best way to migrate to stable lenny version

    My understanding was :

    replacing Etch links in sources.list with Lenny links
    perform aptitude update & aptitude safe ugrape .

    Thats a correct way to upgrade Debian or any other Debian based distro. Make sure to backup data first.

    Debian is a very stable distro and new version is released in long intervals and after verifying everything. I am not a upgrade fan and prefer to go for fresh install instead of upgrade.
    It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
