    Question Why can't I play videos under Debian


    Hi,

    Needless to say, I am a complete newbie in GNU/Debian Linux or any other Linux version. I thought that my old pc would perform better under Linux however what I am experiencing is exactly the opposite.

    With this same machine, I am running a dual-boot system, I can watch any video I want and run lots of applications including Blender 3D under Windows XP. Now I installed Debian and I am not able to even watch videos (.avi, .mov, .mp4, .wmv, .nothing). I'm getting errors like:

    and lots of...

    The only movie player that will stay opened but in black screen is SMPlayer... only sound. MPlayer, VLC and Totem both crashes when a video is trying to load. That also happens with Blender, I mean, it tries to load and crashes immediately.

    I know that my PC is quite limited but as I said it performs all this tasks under XP. Shouldn't it be better under Linux? This computer came with XP installed in it. Bellow is a summary taken from System>Preferences>System Profile Benchmark. By the way I got another Warning when I clicked Generate Report, Selet All, Generate:

    Cannot load ZLib: /usr/lib/libz.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

    Although it says that it doesn't exist there information in the CPU ZLib - System Information field. It reads:

    Then I unchecked CPU ZLid and hit Generate and it worked.

    Correct video driver is not loaded. You need to use openchrome driver. I have the same GPU in one of my computers, it can display HD video.

    If you are running Debian, it is strongly suggested to use a package manager like aptitude or synaptic to download and install packages, instead of doing so manually via this website.

    You should be able to use any of the listed mirrors by adding a line to your /etc/apt/sources.list like this:

    deb EXAMPLE/debian lenny main

    Replacing ftp.de.debian.org/debian with the mirror in question.

    Debian -- Documentation

    Not sure what you are done so far, a good start after Debian install would be running apt-get update and apt-get upgrade.

    I used Debian for many years but I never used the GUI for setup and maintenance, thus my experience is limited to CLI.
