    Ip Masq / port forward

Hello all, I'm new to this forum and semi new yet to linux.
I compiled the 2.6.9 Kernel for my Deb Distro with IpMasq options enabled

when trying to run ipmasq I get "IP Forwarding not enabled in kernel"
so after reading I understand that I should try

cat /proc/sys/net/ip forward and see if it returns a "0" or "1"

should this directory exist? cuz I don't have it.
However my 2.4.22 kernel still works fine with ipmasq
in my /etc/network/options i have 'ipforward = yes'

trying to get port forwarding to work and this needs to work first,
thanks for any help in advance.

reconfigure your kernel and carefully read options regarding port forwarding
