cdrom not detecting install components
Just getting my feet wet in linux. A reliable source suggested Debian. Well I bought this book "Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 and it came with Debian installer. Thought this was too good to be true! Well, during the install I get a message that "cdrom not detecting install components". I ran the the diagnostic utility that was included in the disc and it did not report any issues. Is this typical? Is there a fix?? I'm very anxious to get going!!

Debian 3.1 is very very old and unsupported. You can download a more recent version from Debian -- The Universal Operating System. You may also want to consider Linux Mint Debian edition which you can download from Download - Linux Mint. LMDE is probably better for a beginner as it has more setup and configured by default.

Thanks for the quick response. I realized AFTER I bought that it was old... I just thought having a companion book to read along with it would be useful.
I will follow your advice, Master!

No master me; just a fake guru

The pace of development in the Linux world is extremely fast so things will have come on a bit since the Debian 3 days. Whichever you choose, have fun and enjoy yourself. If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate! (Zapp Brannigan)
