    [SOLVED] Debian on a Dell

I was wondering if Debian Net install would work on a Dell machine. Because when I installed Windows on it I had actually go online with my other computer to find the damn dell drivers. So just wondering if Debian would detect the dell devices and actually have drivers for it.

Yes, I realize it's probably a completely stupid question.

I ran Debian on a Dell computer that I had a few years back and it always worked fine. The only way to know for sure is to try it and see what happens. Most drivers are already included within the Linux kernel, but any proprietary drivers that are needed for your system would need to be installed separately.

Ok thanks for the input. The only problem is that I had to install the ethernet Drivers on the machine after I had installed the windows. and if i need to install the ethernet drivers with Debian I would have to use a live CD instead of a Net install but I can try it before hand. Worse comes to worse I can just through my wireless nic in that machine I suppose.

It's very rare for ethernet cards not to work out of the box with linux. It's more likely the wireless won't work without some tweaking, as they tend to require non-free software.

what kind of dell machine, specifically? I've got fully functional installations on the older Inspiron 8200s, a D630, a D830, and a half a dozen Optiplex systems. Dell has been quite fortunate to not require a LOT of work...I think the hardest thing I had to deal with was D830 and the hibernation, (which works about 40% of the time), but the recent upgrades to suspend support (which works 100% - and is much more in tune for what I need) I'll completely overlook the hibernation issues.
