GNOME DESKTOP - NO SOUND(except for a beep)

I searched the forum for entries related to "sound modules", could not find any, so I tell about my problem:
when I boot my laptop, I get one and only one error message: "..starting open sound ...failed: no kernel modules detected"

I am running the GNOME desktop, which needs the canberra libraries (I learned about it on the opensound homepage). As far as I know I have all the required libraries and packages installed, but I am quite lost when it comes to knowledge about, which kind of drivers/modules the different kind of playing software (alsa, oss) expect to be present. In fact, in /lib/modules/...sound/.. I find about 125 different sound files (with the suffix .ko, which I suppose to be device driver files, compiled as kernel modules, and to be loaded with programs like insmod or modprobe).
The more I dig into the subject, the more confused I get. What makes it all worse: for at short time I had the kde desktop installed, and here I was able to play real music. The cd-player worked, too. Now with GNOME all I have got left is an annoying high frequent beep.
To make things simple : can anybody who has a working sound system on DEBIAN SQUEEZE WITH A GNOME DESKTOP tell me how you managed to produce more sound than just a beep? I go for any software, as long as it works. Thanks a lot

Why not just use KDE if it works the way you want it to?
You can have both installed and use either one anytime.
