I know compiz works fine because compiz --replace puts it into action. Now I want this to happen automatically each time I log into gnome.

    Thanks.

Can you just simply go to "Startup Applications", click add, then type that command in "Command", then set name and comments accordingly?

This should run that command every time you boot up, but then again I could be wrong with this type of command.

    Worth a shot though!

Sorry in advance if this is a way to obvious answer that you've already tried, just trying to help.
