    New Motherboard Problems

I am not new to Linux, but I would not consider myself a "power user" either. I installed a new MB a couple of days ago (the old one was damaged by a close lightning strike). I have no problem booting Linux from the HD (nor XP from the dual boot). But in both Linux and XP, I am having problems with the CDROM. I can't boot Linux from a DVD, nor will a DVD "autorun" in XP. The DVD drive is not changed. I can read the DVD into a file browser in both Linux and XP. In Linux booted from HD, the DVD is /dev/sr0. When I try to run Debian from DVD, I try to mount this device and it doesn't go. I want to install Debian to an open partitian on the HD and I can't seem to get it to work. Any suggestions?

    Hello and welcome.

By "run Debian from DVD" do you mean boot the Debian OS from the DVD? If so, put the DVD in the drive and reboot the computer. If that doesn't work, check the BIOS and make sure the boot order shows CD/DVD before HD. If that doesn't work, post what happened.

Well autorun was disabled in windows on a recent update, maybe this is part of the cause.

Also, is Debian on a CD or a DVD?. PC DVD-ROMs use separate laser and lenses for CD and DVD. Once i found one unit that would read DVD's and not CD's , maybe the unit was also damaged by the lightning too.

    Good luck

I got hit by lightning to, have you checked your PSU and check your DVD CD drives in another unit if possible. Also get yourself a good UPS, making sure everything plugged into it at full load is only 80% or less of its rating. CyberPower have a linux friendly cli interface, although on mine it can only shut one system down.
