    [SOLVED] Rolling a Debian-based distribution.

DISCLAIMER: This is not for mainstream release. This is purely for my own joy/education.

I have been googling for many days on how to do this the proper way, and I need help getting satrted in the right direction. From what I understand, you:

    1. Get a debian netinstall on your machine
    2. Configure everything to your liking
    3. configure debian-installer
    4. Extract working environment to an ISO for installation elsewhere?

I'm by no means looking for a step-by-step tutorial, but if someone could adjust the above steps to what they should be, I would appreciate it. Ultimately my goal is to be able to install my own flavor on other machines of my own.

Would self-branding involve editting the kernel and recompiling it? (logos)

    Thank you for your time.

After reading that, scroll down to Ozar's post and click his link.

Heres a couple more to check out:

    This one <Build a Custim Linux>
tells you how to do your own logo simple.
In the personalize section, you can add your own logo and background to your custom Linux distro.
I know most of these are pretty much tutorials or a lot more than you asked, but I think that's pretty much what you're gonna need. But as for adjusting these:
    1. Get a debian netinstall on your machine
    2. Configure everything to your liking
    3. configure debian-installer
    4. Extract working environment to an ISO for installation elsewhere?
    Looks good to me

Upon reading up on that, it looks like a lot of information I have already looked up. Essentially LFS is the way to go for a custom OS? Even if I would like aptitude/debian repository support?

I guess what I'm looking for is how did an outfit like Ubuntu get started out? Did they compile the kernel and go from there? (Not that I am actually planning to do all of that solo, that would be insane.)

Ultimately, I think I am going to end up contributing to Ubuntu, or something of the like. I have dabbled in os creation before (assembly, fat12 support, basic command line), and I know it is no small task.

I will mark this as solved, thanks for the good info.
