how to edit appearances like tab height etc

the only problem that i have with ubuntu, crunchbang is its big. i dont mean just the font. too much padding is set. lots of space is wasted.

for example take firefox, menu bar (+ the padding) is to much. its not compact like its in xp.

how is it done ?

If I understand what you're talking about, it's a function of the theme you're using. Try different themes and see if they suit you better.
