Wireless Internet Problems
So I recently switched over to Debian 6.0 (with KDE) from Suse 11.4, and my wireless internet problems followed me (which I had expected), on my broadcom bcm4313(I think). So before I installed anything, I ran dmesg and in the output I found:
That is the only thing concerning my wireless that I found. Does this mean I have to install something? and if so, what? Is it this b43 thing and the wl package?Code:brcm80211: module is from the staging directory, the quality is unknown, you have been warned. [ 7.077968] brcm80211 0000:04:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 17 [ 7.077977] brcm80211 0000:04:00.0: setting latency timer to 64 [ 7.078053] brcm80211 0000:04:00.0: firmware: requesting brcm/bcm43xx-0.fw [ 7.143802] brcm80211: fail to load firmware brcm/bcm43xx-0.fw [ 7.143809] brcm80211: Failed to find firmware usually in /lib/firmware/brcm [ 7.143863] brcm80211 0000:04:00.0: PCI INT A disabled [ 7.143878] brcm80211: wl_pci_probe: wl_attach failed!
Additionally, I am not sure what my wireless card is. The output of lspci says its broadcom bcm4313, but on the lenovo wiki (I have an ideapad, v460), it says its a bcm4727. I am pretty sure that its a bcm4313, but I would like to know for sure.
Lastly, does anyone know what the wireless card is called (like maybe eth1) in debian 6.0 or how to find out?
Any help will be TREMENDOUSLY appreciated, so thanks in advance!
By the way, I am not very experienced in the intricate handlings of linux, so if there is anything obvious that I left out, do not hesitate to ask specifications or anything.Last edited by MikeTbob; 07-02-2011 at 12:39 AM. Reason: Added Code tags

as error message above says
fail to load firmware brcm/bcm43xx-0.fw = means you forgot to install the firmware
install the package with the firmware - in openSuSE it is available for install selection in package manager, I am sure other dists may have same, else you somehow install the firmware from openSuSE to your debian
broadcom wireless normally works perfectly since years if firmware package installed properly

do you happen to know exactly which software packages to install? I do not look forward to hunting through and trying out random packages that have "broadcom" in them or bcm or whatever

in Suse 11.4 for your firmware
>YAST>software management>
>then use search function incl "provides"> search for "broadcom"
then you see
- kernel firmware and
- b43firmware
all else as above
I am sure in debian you have similar

Open a terminal window.
As root, do this:
Reboot, and you should be in business.Code:apt-get install b43-fwcutter

It failed... this Debian installing stuff is getting on my nerves:
nikolaj@FashionBug:~$ su
Password:
root@FashionBug:/home/nikolaj# apt-get install b43-fwcutter
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package b43-fwcutter
Its not in synaptic, what do I do now? Is there a problem with my mirror? (debian.uchicago.edu)

Do you even have an ethernet connection going to this computer?
I don't see any IP addresses at all in your ifconfig output.Jay
