Debian Squeeze / Postfix / Dovecot / MySQL / port 25 (smtp)
Hello all. This is my first post so pardon me if I do not use proper etiquette for provide you with everything you need.
Here is my issue:
I have all the installations mentioned in the title set up. However when I telnet remotely to port 25 (telnet host 25) the connection times out. Clearly the port is not listening. However, it seems everything is configured for listening.

In essence I am unable to telnet to port 25 remotely and from some email addresses I get constant bounced emails with errors like the following:
"retry timeout exceeded" and "retry time not reached for any host after a long failure period"
No errors seem to be logged for emails that bounce with those errors.
Can anybody help me?Last edited by mpraetzel; 08-04-2011 at 04:10 AM.

You can check what is listening on what port like this:
netstat -antp | grep LISTEN
If you can see postfix listening and you still can't connect then there might be something blocking outside connections to your server on port 25
Check your internal firewall:
iptables-save
Or if you installed this on your home PC then it's possible your ISP is blocking port 25
