Installed Debian, how do I load Windows?

    Hello there,

I used to be a Vista user, now I installed Debian, and as you know, it is great!

However, I need to get back into Windows from time to time. How do I do that?

    Thanks.

    Kind regards,
    Marius

Not enough information. Did you install Debian over your previous windows? Do you still have windows on your computer and are unable to boot it? Are you trying to reinstall windows and are unable to do so?

Boot Debian and post your partition information in addition to answering the above questions. Open a terminal as root user and run the command: fdisk -l (Lower case Letter L in the command)

It sounds like you chose to install "Grub" in the Debian partition when you should have chosen the first partition on the disk (IE; Windows).

By loading Grub into the first partition of the hard drive all OS's would be recognized including Windows. I believe you can "apt-get remove grub" from root terminal or put "sudo" before the command from the regular terminal. Then before logging off; "apt-get install grub"; this time making the proper selection to install in the first partition of the hard drive.

    Hey guy

As the posters before I'm not sure about your system configuration. But if you ran the standart installation, your problem might be fixed by running "update-grub" as super user. This will update the grub entries and if you didn't remove vista, it will appear in grub.

Let us know about the outcome.

Now, ita worse than it was. It's my fault by the way.

I reinstalled Debian, this time on the whole hdd. I have followed tutorials to resize big partitions using Parted. However when I do the.
    Code:
    resize 1 32.2kb 150GB
I get a warning telling me that the program isn't stable and should not be used for this kind of task. There is no option to proceed anyway, the partition remains it's normal size.

The drive is unmounted by the way.

    What should I do?M

If you want to resize I strongly suggest you download Parted Magic .iso, and burn a boot CD.

I use this program. It is very effective. I just successfully initiated a download from the link site above, although I do not need it. After downloading an .iso, you neeed something like CDrecord to burn it to a bootable CD.

I highly suggest you use this method.

By the way; you cannot hurt anything unless you do something "physical" to the hard drive. You can resize and reformat until you get it right, provided you are willing to reload. Its good experience, actually.

Agreed... that's my favorite distribution when it comes to utility type distros, and doing system chores couldn't get much easier. Anyway, I get my downloads directly from their website because the latest version is always available there first:

There's not a week that goes by that I don't use that liveCD for something.
