    Gnome Resolution Resets after rebooting

    Hi,

    I am running Debian 6.0.2.1 and Gnome GUI. Using the Graphical Nvidia Utility I set my resolution to 1920X1080, but after I reboot the X, my resolution automatically changes to 800X600.I have tried generating a new xorg.conf file using the Nvidia utility and placing it in the /etc/X11 directory. I am experiencing this issue and I can't find how can I prevent this from happening.

    What type of monitor? Make and model, is it LCD or CRT?

    VertRefresh 55.0 - 75.0
    It looks like Refresh Rates are not correct.
    Check your Monitor's Manual for supported Refresh Rates. Set supported HorizSync and VertiRefresh range in xorg.conf file accordingly.
    It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

    Ok... you used nvidia-xconfig to generate that xorg.conf - which is unwise and if you'd read the debian wiki page for this, not recommended. That kind of configuration is just not needed on newer xorg versions. Let's see if the monitor EDID is picked up correctly using automatic settings. Back up your xorg.conf (as root)

    mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak


    Create a new xorg.conf with the below contents only and restart x:

    As a matter of course you need to grep the xorg log file for warnings and errors once again

    This should give you the native resolution of the monitor and hopefully clear the EDID errors, if it doesn't then you will need to follow devils casper's advice and input manual frequency ranges - but see how this goes first.

    If the resolution is now ok you can usually safely ignore the EDID warnings. It may be that there is a problem with it, or that it's an nvidia driver bug.

    Marked the thread as solved when you're sure it's working ok.
