    Java 1.6.0 being moronic

So, whenever I try to install Java 1.6.0 (Via Putty) on the Linux server I have, it doesn't work. It installs fine, but when I do java --version it stills displays as 1.5.0. Not only that, but when I try to uninstall 1.5.0 it says it isn't installed. It even shows up under dpk --get-selections (Right above 1.6). It doesn't help if I reinstall 1.5.0. I am pretty much a Linux noob, so can anyone please help me

Are you installing with a .deb or with a binary from Sun/Oracle? Additionally, was your Java 1.5 installed from a .deb or a binary?

When I get into situations such as this I abandon command line and use Synaptic.
