    hello all
this is one heck of a delemna actually.
I am new to debian and have had some unique software installed.
Trying to get back onto the server to no avail. I have changed
the root password and am onto the root gui but am at a loss as what to do now to revive a username and password. This is so
new and my programmer is nowhere to be found. can any of you
    talented folks help.

    Hi and Welcome !

If you have root privileges then you can access files of any User or change password(s). Execute passwd <username> command to change password or use -d option to delete password.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
