Do I need to configure the sound card? How do I modprobe the card? I remember reading something about that?

    Hi there.

    Have you tried the command
    Code:
    alsamixer
to verify the nothing is muted?

    Read my first post

    'Sound is not muted'

But alsa isn't working for me either.
    Floyd:~# apt-get install alsa(I edited out some)
alsa-base is already the newest version.

    Floyd:~# apt-get install alsa-utils
alsa-utils is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

    Floyd:~# alsaconf
    bash: alsaconf: command not found
    Floyd:~# alsamixer
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory

I just did apt-get remove alsa-base and the same for utils and reinstalled
    and it still doesn't work
But I know it is not muted and I have added user to audio
    Still got nothing

Are you getting sounds from anything at all?
mp3 playback? Youtube or other streaming?

    My notes.

    #apt-get install alsa-base
    #alsactl init
returns-Unknown hardware: "NFORCE" "Analog Devices AD1981B"
    “AC97a:41445374" "0x103c" "0x006d"
    reboot system.

[at this point sound was extended to everything but streaming webcams. ]

    #apt-get install esound
[sound extended to streaming, and multiple interfaces]

[at this point sound is working universally, however - level is low]

    #apt-get install esound-clients
    #esddsp -m

    #apt-get install alsamixergui
adjusting “PCM” levels nets proper results (increased levels)

#lsmod|grep snd (displays results differing from previous)

alsamixergui correctly displays Nforce card and AD1981B chip.
