    Is your video card setup correctly?

    Are you at the command line at least? Can you type "startx" as root and post (using the code button on this page) the results?

    XF86Config

    In Debian, the file /etc/X11/XF86Config for the X-server version 4 MUST be called XF86Config-4, but for some reason no-one tells you that. I spent hours looking through man pages to find this (yeah call me thick, i'm not good at Linux ).

    To fix this, su to root, and run
    Code:
    $ su -
    # xf86config
    After you've answered the questions, type:

    Code:
    # mv /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
    # exit
    $ startx
    This should work. Also make sure you've got packages to satisfy dependencies, you should have anyway if you've used apt.
