Checking facts for article: Text based installer has a bug?

Guys: I'm working on an article about Debian 6, and wanted to get some of your insight.

I've recently installed Debian 6.03, and ran into a serious problem; namely, If you install Debian, on a fresh drive (one with nothing on the drive; either wiped with the partitioner, or one you freshly bought.) it works fine.

However if you try to install Debian by wiping just the / partition, leaving a SWAP, or /home partition, all sorts of bizarre problems happens. GRUB2 won't install at all, and installing any software - including ones that work with KDE 4.x is playing with fire

Has others had this happen before? According to my notes, this has happened since at least V4 of Debian. I only use the text installer since the GUI installer is always hit or miss. (also it's a lot faster)

In my article, I want to say for sure there is an installer bug and to avoid using a drive that isn't' clean.

    Thoughts?

It's never done that to me I'm afraid. Could it be your filesystem choice or a dodgy drive?

    Hi.

There are certainly a number of bugs in the installer. I doubt if even the developers know about all the reported bugs, so you may need to look them over for yourself if you want to "say for sure there is an installer bug and to avoid using a drive that isn't' clean". On page Debian bug tracking system if one enters:
    Code:
    debian-installer
for the bug report search for
    Code:
    Select bugs in package _______
then you will get to page Bugs in package debian-installer -- Debian Bug report logs and you can view reported bugs. The summary at the end lists 144 Outstanding bugs.

    Best wishes ... cheers, drl
