    Closing x server

    Hey all,

I'm trying to install the nvidia driver for x64 linux, and I need to close out of x server in order for the install to happen.

I've seen other postings on here about this problem, and I've tried all of the solutions that I could find, but I still cant seem to get it to close out.

    I've tried:
    1. telinit 3 (in root)
    2. manually changing the runlevel to 3 (/etc/inittab)
    3. command: \etc\init.d\gmd3 stop (in root)

1 and 2 don't fix the problem and 3 shuts down my screen...

Any help on this would be great..

    David

if you do step 3, can you then Ctrl+Alt+Fn (F1, F2, etc.) to jump to a virtual console and log in as root there?
