trying to compile kernel but get [_modinst_post] Error 1

I'm trying to compile a custom kernel 2.6.9 (now have 2.2.2). I do that becouse I need to include usb-ohci module to make my PCI USB card work.
During compilation I get this error:
    depmod: slhc_compress
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /usr/src/linux-2.6.9/debian/tmp-image/lib/modules/2.6.9/kernel/drivers/net/slip.ko
    depmod: slhc_init
    depmod: slhc_free
    depmod: slhc_uncompress
    depmod: slhc_remember
    depmod: slhc_compress
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /usr/src/linux-2.6.9/debian/tmp-image/lib/modules/2.6.9/kernel/drivers/parport_pc.ko

    depmod: parport_ieee1284_write_compact
    depmod: parport_ieee1284_epp_write_addr
    depmod: parport_ieee1284_epp_read_data

    depmod: parport_register_port
    depmod: parport_announce_port
    depmod: parport_put_port
    depmod: parport_ieee1284_read_byte
    depmod: parport_ieee1284_interrupt
    depmod: parport_ieee1284_epp_write_data
    make[2]: *** [_modinst_post] Error 1
    make[2]: Leaving directory '/usr/src/linux-2.6.9'
    make[1]: *** [real_stamp_image] Error 2
    make[1]: Leaving directory '/usr/src/linux-2.6.9'

that's what I get on my screen on the very end. there were more depmod's definitely, but i cann't see them - they are out of screen(higher).
I can't get rid of this... Didn't find much info online.
    Also I was trying only:
    make modules-install
but still get the same errors.
How to compile kernel I follow tutorial

    Thank you for any help.
    p.s. I'm newbie with linux

Give this HowTo a try. It works like a charm!
