Can't get compiz working with Virtual box

I've followed the instructions on the wiki
    wiki.debian.org/Compiz
but when I use the command

    compiz --replace

All the windows and menu items disappear leaving me with only the wallpaper. An error messages appears in the terminal but it's too fast for me to read. A reboot brings me back to the usual gnome desktop.

I installed the virtual box additions from the CD and I have enabled 3D acceleration giving the computer 128 MB of video ram.
    I'm really quite stuck... help

Have you installed the VBox Guest Additions to your system image? That will provide additional video driver software to help with this. Also, you need to configure your VM video settings to maximize available video memory, and enable 2d and/or 3d video capabilities.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
