No network or sound after updates

Hi All, hope someone can help with this. I've run a few updates since the upgrade to Wheezy without a problem but a series of updates last week seem to have thrown things out of kilter.

On restarting the system I was unable to get the keyboard and mouse to respond (both USB). Got around that by unplugging then reconnecting. When I logged in there was no sound output and no network connection (onboard sound and ethernet).

The sound hardware was showing as a dummy device under Sound Preferences. I ran alsa reload and the sound card reappeared. Manually selecting it under Hardware in Sound Preferences got it working. Rebooted and the same thing happened, and the mouse and keyboard again failed to work until unplugged and reconnected.

The network is not working at all. The /etc/network/interfaces file had apparently been changed with the manual information I'd put in being overwritten. I've changed it back, but it's not made any difference. Clicking on Network Manager (using Gnome by the way, in classic and Gnome 3 forms) shows no network device available. Checked the cable, and the ethernet light on the router is on.

For information here's the /etc/network/interfaces file, and the output of lspci and lsmod: -

    IW /etc/network/interfaces Row 6 Col 1 12:11 Ctrl-K H for help

Have you tried 'dpkg-reconfigure <pkg>' with the sound and network pkgs you use?

Our interfaces files are the same except for the primary network interface. Mine: iface eth0 inet dhcp. Is the 'isc-dhcp-client' pkg and its deps installed?
