System very slow all of a sudden

I was hoping someone can help.

I have 4 processor quad core R900 Dell server that I use for multimedia transcoding. Everything was working well and as expected and as any other set up i have completed.

Few days ago I added a multimedia card that was a bit different from the ones that were already installed in the system. When I rebooted it was as if instead of 16 cores i had only 4. The processes that used to take up 50% of CPU now took 500%, any processing seems incredibly slow. I removed the multimedia card I installed and reistallled drivers that took 30 minutes as opposed to 4-5.

"df" doesnt return anything unusual. "top" without my multimedia processes is at 1% max.

Does anyone have any ideas what could have happened to the system?

I can be found either 40 miles west of Chicago, in Chicago, or in a galaxy far, far away.
It is possible that the new multi-media card overloaded the power supply. Some such cards have a very high power draw, and if your PS is not up to the load, it could have been damaged.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
