and it works with older kernel versions?
you might be a victim of []this[/url].
with what little information you gave, there isn't much more to say.
can you switch to another tty with e.g. Ctrl-Alt-F2? text login, provide more information?
until we get started with real troubleshooting, just continue using the older kernel versions.

however, if you really are mixing sources (not sure i got that from your op), that's a big no-no on debian, and might have an impact on the situation.

that's not a good rationale; testing is just what it says, it's for testing new software that might make it into debian proper.
if you really need those newer versions, you might want to use a distro that is based on testing, but tries to minimize breakage. like ubuntu.
Thanks!! The hint was really good, I have just managed to open a parallel tty and then logged in and startx - straight outta gnome now !

But I had a couple of crashes of X - so I may assume that there are some issues with gnome packages at least that

    a) prevent the GUI on tty1 from starting
    b) causing on the other ttys crashes.

which logs should I have a look into in order to rectify this?

don't assume anything like that, please. not yet, at least.

you should now provide the logs we already talked about several times. those that are worthless if you start with nomodeset, remember?
that's what this excercise is about.
