Personally I ran into trouble until I used the Hilux mini cd installer with kernel 2.4.26 for my os, then I used apt-get and got the newest version of dansguardian. I think my original problem was that you need at least kernel 2.4 or newer.
After that it worked quite well with only some minor adjustments.
