    Heeelp, disabled touchpad after apt-get

I am such a klutz with Linux. I hardly know what I'm doing and so I typically run afoul when I try things. I usually get my brother to bail me out when I foul things up, but he's unavailable this time.
After running apt-get update and apt-get install, I find the touchpad mouse (Dell Latitude L400) disabled. Any ideas on how to get it back?
    Thanks...
