startx problem - no screens found yet I configured X already

Hello, I read the Very Verbose Debian guide, I really enjoyed this guide and I did everything it wanted me to do. I configured x perfectly and everything yet when I startx it tells me that no screens could be found.... Well I wouldn't find this piece of news dissapointing except I configured x already. I also put on synaptic through apt-get, everything went fine but Debian refuses to launch a display for it, rendering it useless to me. I really don't care too much about synaptic at this very point in time though, I would rather have x start for me. Thanks for any helpful advice on what to do.

Ack - almost forgot.. I am running Debian Woody (current), I also have a pretty decent system that will be more than enough to run Debian; I bring this up because I noticed when X refused to start because of the lack of screens up above it, it says that it could not auto detect hardware. Maybe it thinks it is too old or something, I don't know. I'll I can tell you is that my system is very nice for me, but my dad has a much nicer computer.

Let's see here..... I run a 32 bit processor, 512mb of ram, I have an ATI Radeon 9500 Pro, etc. It's nice for what I need it for, not top of the line but it should run Debian, and Debian should auto detect my hardware. My question is now: If Debian cannot auto detect my hardware to run startx how do I go about fixing this?? I have been in a distro shuffle for so long I just want something I can stick to, and with Debian's amazing packages I think I just found it. Now to just get that X working and I'd be in business.
To get to where I could configure x it was "apt-get install x-window-system" but now apt has already installed it I can't get back in, where did this write to, so where I can edit x again to mkae some changes if I need to?

I'd just like to get this to work, Debian interests me. Thanks.

Umm you know what, I had exact same problem with display when I was fumbling around with debian woody, it's anicent, it's sporting a 2.2 kernel, and got horrible hardware detection, get debian sarge or sid. With Sarge you can do a ftp install which is easy and you get a perfect system which you can customize to your needs.

    Sarge http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/
    Sid http://www.debian.org/releases/unstable

Thanks. I went with Sarge, everything is really cool. Debian Sid just scares me...

One thing though: Sarge now has a newbie login screen and I can't figure out how to get into the wm I want. The session menu only lists KDE, Gnome, and IceWM, yet I've installed Enlightenment and Ratpoison. I tried going into a failsafe terminal to launch the wm of my choice but it wouldn't let me and just shot me into the default (Gnome). I really kind of miss Debian Woody, but Sarge at least works.

And for some reason I cannot apt-get Mozilla Firefox. Firefox is better in my opinion, although Mozilla is ok too.

Have you ever used Sid? I've read that it has the newest programs but I don't want to use something like is highly unstable. Thanks for the help.

No Ive never tried sid, but for apt-get soruces:

    http://www.apt-get.org

then copy and paste the source of the package you want into /etc/apt/sources.list, here this will set you up:

    Code:
    #deb file:///cdrom/ sarge main

    deb ftp://debian.blueyonder.co.uk/pub/debian/ testing main
    deb-src ftp://debian.blueyonder.co.uk/pub/debian/ testing main
    deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ testing main

    deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main
    deb http://www.linex.org/sources/linex/debian sarge linex
    deb http://mail.linuxvar.it/~gianluca/athlon-xp testing main
    deb http://ftp.acc.umu.se/mirror/mirrors.evilgeniuses.org.uk/debian/backports/woody gnome2.2/
    deb-src http://ftp.acc.umu.se/mirror/mirrors.evilgeniuses.org.uk/debian/backports/woodygnome2.2/
It's my sources.list Use the ones at the bottom.
