Has anyone installed Debian on Dell OptiPlex SX 280?
Hi,
I am looking for a small footprint PC to use as a Debian desktop. The Dell OptiPlex SX280 looks about the right spec for what I want. Just wondering if anyone out there has tried a Debian install on this system. Recomendations for alternative hardware is also appreciated.

Hi,
I've installed varying versions of debian on a wide range of Dell machines (GX110, GX240, GX260, GX270, PRECISION 340, PRECISION 520, PowerEdge servers, etc) but not any of the SX series. I beleive the hardware is very similar, and most things work out of the box with a standard install of debian sarge. Building a customised kernel is recommended for best performance (and to get the sound working - that's the only thing that doesn't work on the GX280 out-of-the-box).
We have a dual-boot Windows XP/Debian Sarge image (using Ghost 8.0 Corporate) that works really well. I could send you our .config file if you'd like (for the GX280).

Thanks
Thanks for the reply. Sounds like it would work. No need to send the config. The person I was recommending it for went with an Acer. Good to know most Dell's are fully compatible though.
