    newbie problem/installation

    Hi all

Used to use linux and openbsd a few years ago and now ive decided to go back to it again. Installed debian-31r0a-i386-netinst and added the "desktop" applications. However first when i was asked for either s3, vga, vesa and those choices i first picked vesa(think thats what it was called, but dont remember completely) but then after i was about to log in the screen just went black. Second attempt at installing i tried vga instead and got to the standard menu login prompt. Added a .Xsession file that i just put "exec kde" in but then after trying to runt startx it complains about not understanding the line "exec kde".

Ive got a nvidia quadrofx 500 card and a pretty standard dell 19" monitor

I cant seem to get the GUI to start at all, is there a xserver configuration command i have to run first or what am i missing? something that went wrong during my installation? since i couldnt find Nvidia as a selection i tried VGA instead?

    Any help much appreciated

    Try

    exec startkde

    or

    startkde

    in your .xinitrc file

well would you believe it, turns out that gnome or any other window manager for that reason didnt get installed during the package installation. After adding gnome everything works fine, now its time to see if its gonna run Maya or if i need some extra nvidia drivers for that. Thanks for your help though guys/girls
