Can't login in as root on any GUI

    Hi

I am trying to set various things up on my machine and I am sure I can do them from the debian GUI (which I think is excellent!) becuase I have to be the root user.

When I try and log in as root user all I get is that the login windo shudders a bit and then just says something about the system aministrator can't log in. I find that a bit strange. When I login as root from the console all is fine!

Any help on this would be great.

    Cheers

In Debian root can not login to X.

What you can do is su into root, via console.
Then launch the app that you want to chane from the console.

you can change the "no root login at gui" if you want. In GDM for example, under the setup you can select allow root login

No one should ever login as root.
Do not enable that option in GDM.

    Thanks for your answers.

What I have been doing as alt+ctrl+F1 / F7 to switch between DebianX window and console. It would just be eaier if I could do it all from the desktop, although I do wish to learn to do it all from the command line.

Now - if I could just get my NIC working with linux so I can connect to the internet!

    Thanks for your answers.

Instead of going into Alt + Ctrl + F1, why not just open up a terminal.
You can open it, minmizie it, have several terminals open in tabs.
Much easier than using Ctrl + Alt + F1.

Thanks for the tip - yes I have actualy been doing that. I like the multiple desktops that you can have as well.

I am still stick for getting on the net.

I am sure all my files ate correctly set up but I am pretty sure my 3com NIC ethernet card needs the correct drivers installing and it keeps failing when I select them!

ifconfig eth0 gives me all the hardware info. All the files are set up as far as I am aware.

I am trying to set up a PPP connection to a DSL modem.
I can turn pon and poff

    Interestingly I don't have a /var/log/ppp.log file?

    Hmmmm

Why are you trying to use PPP with an Ethernet card?
    PPP is for dialup.
Maybe PPPoE would be better. I don't use DSL, so I am not sure if this is correct or not.

    Hi

I have used pppoe to configure it.
I didn't think ppp was specificaly for dial up though is it?
Its peer to peer (or point to point) protocol.

I am fairly sure all my files are set up correctly. I can't get the drivers to load for my card. I know the hardware addresses and all the details but the drivers won't load, they are there.

    Hmmmm????

I had similar problems, and eventually found a solution that worked. I assume you've done "Control Center - Internet & Desktop - Local Network Browsing - LISA Daemon" and set up the IP addresses? That's all I had to do to get on the Internet with mine.

To get the Linux machine to allow the others on the network to access it, now that was a bundle of laughs. Eventually I found the fix for that (a bit of a kludge, I have to say) on a German-language Knoppix forum.
