Ubuntu Breezy Badger - X11 will not start

I just installed Ubuntu 5.10 Release 2 and things are not going well at all. I was able to get into X directly after the install so I did some updates and such and I shut off my pc. I get up this morning only to find out that GDM does not want to start. It comes up with an error saying it could not start X the reason:
    Code:
    /etc/X11/X is not executable

I did an apt-get to install x-window-system, I replaced xorg with xfree86, I have killed gdm and put into my .xinitrc "exec gnome-session" but when I startx the command is not found. This is highly annoying me. Is this because Breezy is unstable right now? Is it something that I did? What can I do to make /etc/X11/X executable? Thanks for the help.

Breezy's X is VERY unstable right now. Very few people are able to get it to work consistently. I would strongly advise just doing an install based strictly off the CD and not upgrading any packages for a while
