Ok, I think Ubuntu uses GDM, so you should be able to select a fluxbox "session" in GDM right before logging in. You can delete the .xinitrc file if it's not needed.

oh ok, now i got it, now i need to know how to edit and mess around with flux box, because i noticed all i had for a menu was xterm, exit and restart. how do i change colors, add programs ect..ect..

in order to "build" the menu you have to install the package called 'menu'
colors and stuff can be edited in the style specific file (usually stylenamerc, standing in /usr/share/fluxbox/styles/)
if you want to install a theme,
create .fluxbox/styles and unpack your theme in it.

Debian and derivates don't use .xinitrc but .xsession

Look in your /home/.fluxbox directory (notice the dot in front of fluxbox). That's where the config files are.

The menu file needs to be hand edited, but it's easy to understand.

The "init" file explains a lot, too.

Colors/themes are handled in Styles. You can choose a different style, or create your own.

the "/home/.fluxbox" is in my gnome default session or in my fluxbox session?, even more so, do i need to downloaded everything onto my fluxbox session or can i just move stuff there or copy stuff there?

Not sure I understand exactly what you mean... and not sure where the .fluxbox folder winds up under Ubuntu, but on my Arch box it's under /home/.fluxbox

Once you edit your fluxbox menu, you should be able to start any of your already installed apps from within fluxbox. You shouldn't have to move or download anything. In fact you should be able to start any apps from xterminal simply by typing the name of the program. Editing the menu would be easier, though. You could use fluxbox-generate_menu but I've always edited mine by hand.

well what i mean about the programs thing is, do i need to install programs that are already on my default gnome session onto my fluxbox? or will they already be on fluxbox and do i just need to put them on the menu thing

No, you shouldn't have to reinstall anything. They should start in Fluxbox the same as they did in Gnome once you get your menu ready to go, or you start them from within a terminal.

alright, well how do i start adding applications and whatnot to my fluxbox menu?

Look at your menu file in your /home/.fluxbox directory. If there's not one there, look for one at /usr/share/fluxbox/menu. If there's one there, copy it to your /home/.fluxbox folder, then edit it by finding apps already listed in the menu that you don't have on your system. Substitute the app names and start commands for each app you DO have on your system in place of those you don't have.

Again, you might find using "fluxbox-generate_menu" easier, while I like doing mine by hand. Documentation for fluxbox-generate_menu can be found at the link I posted above.
