vmware+debian=arghhhhh
I had a problem with vmware 5.0 on my Debian Sarge. I resolved it by downloading the .tar 5.5 version from vmware.com. Now it works great and I can test my Windows2000 WSUS server freely. I suggest using the .tar archive from the vmware site.
(my kernel is 2.6.14.2)

Converting a rpm to a deb package (and installing it) is inconsistent and can lead to breakage. You need to use the official install script and install it into /usr/local or /opt
