    I started using http's because that is the type listed in the Debian Apt How-To. However, I've used both with some other Distros and can't say that I've ever been pressed to choose one over the other on any occasion.
    It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

    I would just stick with the default. APT can be really fussy, so I would use whatever works
