I agree, I installed SimplyMepis 3.3.2 Test02 yesterday on my Thinkpad T40 laptop and it's the second Distro I've found that configures the onboard Agere Winmodem correctly. Mepis 3.1.1 finds the modem and it works but then I had no sound. Xandros finds and configures the modem but doesn't recognize a dialtone.

I liked SimplyMepis also, but I had booting problems. It didn't configure the bootloader correctly and I was too much of a newbie to figure out how to do it myself. I also had a problem with the repositories,

I did like the software packages that came with the distro though, and the look and feel.
