I've use xmms now, but would like to use Rhythmbox instead...

I can't see what the problem is. I can play mp3s in RhythmBox. How do you try playing mp3s? I got it working by "importing the folder" the mp3s were in.
I installed XMMS not too long ago and found it way better. I haven't messed around with RhthymBox, but depending on your sound setup, I found XMMS to sound better. In any case, try importing the folder where the mp3s are and let us know of any errors. I remember first installing Linux and not being able to play mp3s. However, after installing XMMS, the mp3 plugins were also installed.

Can you play mp3's in xmms or beep?

Be sure you have the gstreamer0.8-mad and libmad0 pkgs installed.
It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.
