How do I add testing phase packages from the web to sources.list without losing stables?

If you mean mixing both repos, that's not a very good idea!
Better just update to testing or unstable or even better, use backports on your stable:
http://backports.org/ (meaning you can add one single package to your sources.list without making it less stable)

All I did was open up my /etc/apt/sources.list and changed all the "stable"(s) to "testing." Then ran...

    apt-get update

    apt-get uprade

Now I have Etch and everything runs smoothly.
