Have you tried looking in the hp project at Sourceforge?

Try installing this package:

hpijs

This should give you the required drivers.

Take a look at my post "HP support" in the hardware forum. HP says they are working on Linux drivers and I am trying to confirm it.

Neither SANE nor Vuescan support some of the more recent HP scanners

In re the HP project and "HPIJS"---these seem to be all about printing--I did not see any discussion of scanner support.

I installed the drivers for my psc1210 from the hp project and the scanning functionality of my printer is fully supported. The hp device manager installs with a simple interface that provides quick access to printing, scanning, copying.[/img]

So this is almost 4 years after the fact but:
HP 4600 Scanjet Software for Linux - Chmil.org
I've cobbled together something that will at least let you do a 600dpi full page color scan. From there, you can GIMP it to whatever format you prefer. Please let me know if it works for you. (Tested on Ubuntu.)
