Please don't use the software from Application---sound & video---audacity.
Just type "audacity" from command line.
Since I am using Fedora 3,I can't give suggestion on your distro.
Otherway around--right click desktop--add a launcher--give a name--on command--browse and point it to /usr/bin/audacity.Select suitable icon.
Thats all.
U can operate from that short cut too.
Enjoy it.

I don't know if this is going to help you or not, but I just went thru the same thing tonite when I installed Kanotix to my HDD. I went to Audacity's preferences and found that under audio I/O the channels setting was on 1-MONO and I set it to 2-STEREO and it started working. Honestly not sure thats what did it but not gonna knock it while it's working. Good Luck

If you want to use the soundcard with audacity you need to shut the sound server down.
It's somewhere on the top toolbar, preferences / sound or summat like that. You get a selection of sound server on and sound for events. Just uncheck the sound server box. Can't be more specific about the location as I don't use Gnome.
A more clever method would be to install JACK and pipe audacity through that but that's probably more hassle than it's worth.

I'm running Agnula Debian and I've found that Audacity won't run while using JACK as a server. If this is the case for you, you may have to stop JACK before running Audacity.
