    alsa-utils Remove Gnome?

I am having some problems with alsa and was going to try and install alsa-utils via synaptic upon some advice. When I mark for installation it says it will remove gnome and everything associated with gnome. Why in the world is that?

I have no experience with Synaptic and I have no idea why that would be, but you should simply try
    Code:
    # apt-get install alsa-base

I already have alsa installed, I can't run alsaconf so I was told to get alsa-utils.

Nah, I got that as well. You must be using either Etch or SID. You can't upgrade or install the latest release as it conflicts with most of the Gnome packages. Use the previous version instead.

    alsa-utils is an alsa-base dependency.
